Watch Out for These Contractor Danger Signs!
During times of Natural Disasters and Economic Slowdowns, be especially careful of who you choose to do work on your home. Your home is likely the single largest investment you will ever make and it is not a good idea to risk doing business with and trusting your investment to shady contractors. There are too many stories of ripped off homeowners that lost thousands of dollars to con-artists and gypsy contractors. Here are some things to consider:- Does your contractor have a local address?
- Does your contractor have local referrals?
- How long have they been in business?
- How much are they asking for up-front? Never give more than half up-front. Use staged (phase completion) payments.
- Do they take credit cards? This is a great way to use the credit card protection plan to help protect yourself.
- Do they have adequate Insurance? Do they have any insurance???
- Never Pay In CASH! Any reputable company will have a bank account and will accept checks and credit cards.
- Beware of the "Storm Chasers". They will not be in town when you need warranty service.
- Does not offer a warranty
- Contract is not clear or does not acurately describe (in detail) what the complete job scope is.
- Price is far below other bids (If is sounds too good to be true, it probably is!)
