Isn’t all Exterior Paint the same?

Actually, no. Paint technology has come a long way. There really is a difference from the low end big box paints to the upper-end top brand and designer paints. You really do get what you pay for!

But no matter what brand you choose, all paint is made up of these four components:

Carriers is what the base of the paint is called. They disperse the other ingredients into a uniform paint film. The choices generally are confined to either mineral spirits (in the oil or alkyd paints) or water. Water is the base carrier for latex paint. Latex paint is becoming much more advanced and is more popular than oil based paints now due to environmental concerns.

Binders are the most expensive ingredient in paint. That’s the glue that holds the paint film together. Color retention, UV protection, durability and flexibility come from the quality of the binder. The most common binders in latex paint is acrylic (best) and vinyl acrylic (entry level). Sherwin-Williams Super Paint uses 100% Acrylic.

Pigments give paint its color and it’s ability to cover or hide under-coat colors. Flat paints are higher in pigment than gloss paints. Since binders cost more than pigment and gloss paint has more binder and less pigment, gloss paint tends to be more expensive. Pigments can be considered “Prime Pigment” or “Extender Pigments”. Quality paints like Sherwin-Williams Super Paint contain more Prime Pigments.

Additives are used to enhance a paints workability, splatter control, leveling and mildew resistance. High quality paints have the additives needed to go on easy, fill minor imperfections and resist mildew along with not making a mess from splatter while applying it.

Another important consideration is the level of Volatile Organic Compounds or VOC’s. VOC’s contribute to smog and are regulated by the Ozone Transport Commission. Sherwin-Williams is committed to the lowest levels of VOC’s and odor while providing an ultra-smooth finish and a one-hide coat.
