The Problem
When shopping for options to replace your rotten wood siding, think in terms of solving the problem once and for all.
You see, the problem with wood in the first place is that it is susceptible to rot, bugs and is just generally higher maintenance than other options.
The Cover-Up
You could go with vinyl, but vinyl is very thin and most of the time is applied right over the existing siding. You’re basically just hiding the damage and it will continue to rot and the termites will continue to propagate underneath your fresh looking skin.
Aluminum is not really a good option either. Aluminum conducts heat and is also usually applied as a cover up.
Solve the Problem
The only real solution is to completely remove the existing wood products and vapor barrier, inspect the substrate, repair any dry rot and treat for termites. Then apply a new vapor barrier (also, now is a good time to consider a radiant barrier) and replace your wood products with something better!
